Talking To Your Child About Your Cancer

Pickles Group- Free peer-to-peer support and resources for kids and teens impacted by their parent's cancer.

One of the most difficult things about being diagnosed with cancer as a parent of young children can be telling them about it. We highly recommend the book “Helping your children cope with your cancer, a guide for parents and families” by Peter Van Dernoot.

There are some topics, like death or cancer, that can be difficult for grownups to have a handle on, let alone explain to a small child. Books can be an amazing tool for communicating about these issues in a straightforward but age-appropriate manner. The following list features a few of our favorite books that can help grownups talk to children about these subjects.

Great Books To Share With Your Child:

  • The Great Katie Kate tackles questions about cancer By M. Maitland DeLand MD
  • Nowhere hair by Sue Glader
  • You are the best medicine by Julie Aigner Clarke
  • Great books about loss for children include:
  • The Invisible String by Patrice Karst
  • The Memory Box: a book about grief By Joanna Rowland
  • Ida, Always by Caron Levis
  • Tear Soup by Pat Schwiebert and Chuck Deklyen

Anyone of us could find ourselves in this position having drained all resources fighting for our lives and facing difficulty scraping together funds for basic needs like food, rent, and utilities.

Our Family and Patient Assistance Grant assists with housing, utilities, and burial for qualified stage 4 terminal cancer patients and their caregivers.
